One of China’s wealthiest cities and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Shēnzhèn (深圳) draws a mix of business people, investors and migrant workers to its golden gates. It's a popular, easy day trip from Hong Kong, surprising most visitors who just expect a peek at a very serious mainland China, but find a thriving club and indie-music nightlife, or squads of housewives breaking out dance moves in public squares into the evening. The myriad theme parks, which include fun miniature landmarks, also amuse, as do the quirky specialty markets where you can grab a bargain house decoration or dozen.

  1. The sprawling OCT-LOFT complex, converted from fashionably austere communist-era factories, is one of the best places to see contemporary art in Shēnzhèn, and makes for a wonderful (if ever-more commercial) browse-as-you-stroll experience. Large exhibition spaces and private galleries – many closed on Mondays – are complemented by chilled cafes (not to mention the ubiquitous Starbucks), restaurants with exposed ventilation ducts, quirky fashion boutiques, a gem of a bookstore, and the obligatory 'lifestyle' outlets.
  2. Guānlán Original Printmaking Base - At this 300-year-old village, rows of quaint black-and-white houses exuding a modest, functional elegance unique to Hakka architecture are occupied by the workshops and galleries of printmaking artists from China and overseas. The village, with its tree-lined paths and lotus ponds, is open all day, but the galleries keep different hours. The journey from downtown Shēnzhèn takes about 1½ hours. Check the website for exhibitions, events and detailed directions.
  3. Old Shēnzhèn Museum - Theold Shēnzhèn Museumin Litchi Park (Lìzhī Gōngyuán) has been converted into a museum of ancient arts that has mildly interesting displays of some 20,000 jade, porcelain and bronze artefacts.
  4. Shēnzhèn Museum - The hulking Shēnzhèn Museum provides a solid introduction to Shēnzhèn's short yet dynamic history of social transformation, both before and after the implementation of Deng Xiaoping’s policies of reform. Highlights include propaganda art popular in the 1940s and the colourful scale models in the folk culture hall.
  5. Hé Xiāngníng Art Gallery - The esoteric permanent collection here features Japanese-influenced Chinese water paintings by Hé Xiāngníng (1878–1972), the late master of modern Chinese art and well-known revolutionary. These are complemented by temporary exhibits that range from avant-garde Chinese art to Western works of an experimental nature. The gallery is one metro stop from OCT-LOFT.
  6. OCT Art & Design Gallery - The bare interiors of this former warehouse are filled with the works of excellent mainland and international graphic designers. Exhibits change frequently. It's a glass-encased steel structure adjacent to Hé Xiāngníng Art Gallery.
  7. Splendid China - Home to miniature replicas of China's famous sights. Included in the admission is China Folk Culture Village, which has two dozen faux minority villages complete with minority-culture demonstrations. A mini-monorail run by the Shenzhen Happy Line Tour Co links the parks, along with several other sights.
  8. OCT East - Some 20km east of downtown Shēnzhèn is OCT East, an upmarket theme-park-meets-resort. Think Universal Studios plus Chinese Disneyland, with a mock Swiss village, a golf complex, a scenic tea valley and luxury hotels thrown in. You can rent a car inside the park to tour around in. Sightseeing Bus 1, which leaves from Window of the World, with stops at Dìwáng Dàxià (Shennan Lu), has its last stop at the park.
  9. Dàpéng Fortress - This walled town and lively village built 600 years ago lies on Shēnzhèn's eastern edge and was a key battle site in the Opium Wars of the 19th century. Stately mansions, fortress gates and ornate temples from the Ming and Qing dynasties are the main attractions. Having the place to yourself with very few visitors is another.
  10. China Folk Culture Village - Featuring two dozen faux minority villages complete with minority-culture demonstrations, China Folk Culture Village is linked by a mini-monorail run by the Shenzhen Happy Line Tour Co to Splendid China and Window of the World, along with several other sights.
  11. Window of the World - Just a few minutes' walk from the OCT Art & Design Gallery, you’ll find a series of dated theme parks that are always packed with snap-happy Chinese tourists. Window of the World sports a collection of scale replicas of famous world monuments. Foreigners being misidentified as part of the exhibits is not unheard of. Not all replicas are lit up at night, so come before sunset if you must see everything.
  12. Litchi Park - Head to the spacious park within the city (think Central Park), which may still get busy but at least here the mood is created by musicians, elderly taichi practitioners, lovers crossing mock-ancient bridges and a small lake. There are a few kids amusement rides and paddleboats for rent.
  1. Bollywood Café – address: 3 fl, 2055 Renmin Nanlu; tel. 0755 8222 0370.

One of the top restaurants for international food in Guǎngdōng – definitely the best Indian. The South Indian flavours have kick in the Kedai chicken or flaky naan. A steady flow of Indian families and businessmen to the white-tableclothed tables give a nod to the authenticity.

  1. Super Steak – address: 2028 Renmin Lu; tel. 0755 8261 1639.

The menu in this sleek fusion spot is a feast for the eyes and palate, with over 400 diverse choices, from pad thai noodles to sashimi to steak.

  1. Muslim Hotel Restaurant, address: 2013 Wenjing Nanlu; Tel. 0755 8225 9664.

Expect hearty beef and mutton dishes in this halal restaurant run by the Hui (Chinese Muslims). It's in a hotel done up like a mock mosque.

  1. Laurel – address: Renmin Nanlu; tel. 0755 8232 3668.

An excellent, modern, dim-sum restaurant on the 5th floor of Luóhú Commercial City.

  1. Phoenix House – address: 4002 Huaqiang Beilu; tel. 0755 8207 6338.

One of the best Cantonese restaurants in town, but expect noisy waits for 30 minutes or more after 11.30am. Some of the dim sum can be ordered by the piece.

  1. Summer Tea House – address: 7th & 8th fl, Jīntáng Dàxià, 3038 Bao’an Nanlu; tel. 0755 2557 4555.

Tucked away in an office building near Xīhú Bīnguǎn is this vegies’ favourite in Shēnzhèn, with healthy ingredients, a relaxing tea-tasting area and a smoke-free dining hall. There's no English menu, but colourful pictures illustrate the dishes. Vegetarian dim sum is available even for dinner. There are more filling options too, if you’re hungry.

  1. Yīdùtáng – address: Enping Lu; tel. 0755 8610 6046.

International and local indie bands play almost every night after 10pm at this warehouse-turned-bohemian-haunt in OCT-LOFT. It's a pleasant place with large glass panes, a soaring ceiling (from which chandeliers hang) and velvet armchairs placed next to brick walls. During the day it's an upmarket cafe.
